The Central Electoral Board has approved a grace period for foreigners to renew their personal identification cards, called "cedulas". According to El Nuevo Diario, the JCE says that foreigners can renew their cards, paying the nominal costs plus a RD$1,000 late fee, no matter when they expired. The penalties for late renewal can otherwise add up to thousands.
Several weeks ago Roberto Rosario, the new chief magistrate of the JCE announced that tens of thousands of foreigners had failed to renew their "cedulas". The grace period extends from 25 January until 30 April this year.
