The executive vice-president of the State Electricity Company (CDEEE), Celso Marranzini, said that the recent fuel price increases would not lead to further increases in the electricity rates.

In an aside, the executive said that there are people, however, who seem to think that the generators run on water. He said that the government is continuing to subsidize electricity as a way of providing the service to hundreds of thousands of non-paying users.

Marranzini's comments came as the CDEEE marked its 56th anniversary with a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez in Santo Domingo Cathedral.

The CDEEE executive said that there are now 650,000 customers on 24-hour circuits and the goal is to reach a million, which is only half of the consumers. He said that if this happens, perhaps the other half would be motivated to pay for their electricity.

As usual, Marranzini said that while the electricity distributors are satisfying around 82% or 84% of demand, they could never supply 100% because of people who steal electricity or do not pay for it.
