The Board of Directors of the Health Risk Administrator of the Teacher's Medical Insurance (ARS-Semma) appointed physician Bernardo Defillo as the interim director of the institution after the dismissal of Taina Gautreau.

In the meantime, yesterday, the Semma offices were plunged into chaos in the face of demands by dozens of subscribers seeking authorizations for medical procedures.

Speaking to the press, the Minister of Education, Melanio Paredes, said that Defillo, who is his advisor on social security issues, would serve in the post until a list of candidates is presented to the Executive Branch.

Defillo was chosen during an extraordinary meeting during which it was decided to review and pay the real debts to all the Health Service Providers (PSS) as well as sponsoring a dialogue with the Association of Private Clinics and Hospitals (Adeclip), with the aim of ending the suspension on services for ARS affiliates.

The lack of an official to authorize medical procedures led to a change of heart among the people waiting at Semma headquarters. Worst affected were patients who suffer from catastrophic diseases and those who required laboratory tests and studies such as x-rays.
