Last academic year, the Dominican educational system graduated 241 students from high school at the age of 14. They made up a tiny percentage of the 121,448 students that graduated last year, but are on average four years younger than the average age of graduation. It also implies that these students were sent to school at a very young age or achieved outstanding grades to be able to graduate so early. As well as these young graduates, 2,228 graduated at the age of 15 and 14,829 graduated at 16. According to Hoy newspaper, most of the very young graduates came from the provinces of Santo Domingo, San Cristobal and the National District.
