A poll by the Economic Center of the Cibao (CEC) released yesterday established that former President Hipolito Mejia can count on the votes of 57.1% of the people intending to take part in the next PRD convention against 41.8% for Miguel Vargas Maldonado. According to the sample polled between 7 - 10 January, the CEC found that Mejia had overtaken Vargas Maldonado in the four regions into which the poll was divided.

In the Greater Santo Domingo area, Mejia is favored by 53% of potential voters, against 45.1% granted to Vargas, the president-on-leave of the PRD. In the northern region, the potential PRD electors assigned 59.5% to Mejia and 39.7% to Vargas Maldonado. In the south, he also had the advantage, 53.5% to 45.1% and in the east it was 63.3% and 36.7%.

CEC president Leonardo Aguilera told Diario Libre reporters that the survey covered a universe of 1,200 people of voting age who appear on the PRD voting list. According to the technical data, the survey has a 95% degree of confidence and a margin of error of +/- 2.8%. In response to the question "who do you think has the best chance of winning the PRD convention: Hipolito Mejia or Miguel Vargas Maldonado?" those polled favored Hipolito with 55.3% against 42.7% for Miguel.
