Tonight a most unusual Final Series gets under way in La Romana. This series, which features the two teams from the heartland of Dominican baseball, the east, has never had the exclusive celebration of the Final Series of the Dominican Winter League Baseball Tournament. Never. Ever.
The fact that the Toros were one of the strongest teams all year long and that the Estrellas Orientales, one of the oldest teams in the League were also at or near the top of the standings, goes against decades of baseball history. In fact, this is only the third time in 57 years that a team from the east will win the championship. It has been 42 years since the Estrellas took a title; they are the Chicago Cubs of the tournament. For the Toros, it will be 16 years since their last title. Many of the fans have never seen the championship trophy in their lifetimes. None of this matters now, since this unique nine-game series will be played entirely to the east of Santo Domingo. The short commute between San Pedro de Macoris and La Romana will make access for fans from both clubs a lot easier and there are hopes for a massive attendance at the games. May the best team win!
