Informal food stalls are banned within the Basilica of Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia in Higuey, but the religious authorities have not been able to successfully deal with dozens of Haitians who cook and sell food in the premises without adhering to hygiene standards. According to El Caribe, reporters observed a large number of Haitians preparing food on improvised stoves, plus what is described as a massive presence of Haitian children begging at the entrance of the Basilica and in connecting avenues and streets.

As reported in El Caribe, the rector of the Basilica, Father Evaristo Areche Freijomil said he had warned them that cooking was banned, but says he has no way of enforcing the order.

El Caribe reports that a mass in Creole is part of the festivities marking the celebration of the Our Lady of High Grace Virgin on Friday, 21 January, a national holiday.
