Hamilton Campaigns presented the results of a recent poll on the leading presidential candidate hopefuls into the 2012 presidential election yesterday. The polling company says that President Leonel Fernandez leads with 77% in the preferences of the PLD and Miguel Vargas has 63% in the preferences in the PRD. The 2010 Constitution bans President Leonel Fernandez from running for President. Likewise, in 2004, then President Hipolito Mejia was banned from running for President but changed the Constitution so he could seek re-election. The same constitution banned President Fernandez from running for President ever again, but he pushed through a change of the Constitution that would allow him to run again in 2016.
The president of Hamilton, David Beattie was in Santo Domingo to release the findings of the recent poll held 5-10 January nationwide. Some 1,200 people were polled.
Results show that 17% of those polled favored Danilo Medina, 4% Jose Tomas Perez and 1% Vice President Rafael Alburquerque as other candidates who have expressed an interest in running for President. The same poll showed that if Fernandez does not run for President, Medina would be the preferred candidate with 56%, followed by Jose Tomas Perez 20%, and Alburquerque 8%.
