The Consumer Protection Agency, known as Proconsumidor, has warned that if standard form contracts are not registered with the agency, besides being in contempt, the offending parties could also have the contracts declared null and void in case of lawsuits.

Proconsumidor director Altagracia Paulino told El Nuevo Diario that she would be talking to the Dominican Bar Association (Colegio de Abogados) to ensure that from now on the litigants will demand that the contracts need to be certified by Proconsumidor.

She reminded reporters that Law 358-05 established that these boilerplate contracts, whether in force or not, have to be submitted to the state consumer protection entity.

The National Institute for Protection of Consumer Rights "will create a system of registering" the contracts, including financial contracts.

The action is being taken after consumers complained they were obliged to sign abusive contracts in order to receive a service.
