The attempt by the government to establish a special RD$1 fee on fuels to fund housing for members of the public transport owners union favored by the government is meeting strong resistance. Guillermo Caram of the PRSC described the move as a "joke in very bad taste and an insult to society". Some days ago, according to El Caribe, the Minister of Hacienda, Vicente Bengoa, said that the Executive Power was going to send a bill to Congress that would establish a RD$1 tax on each gallon of gasoline, diesel, avtur, kerosene and propane sold in the country. These funds would go towards building affordable housing and renewing public transport vehicle fleets, similar to the notorious "Plan Renove" several years ago. This deal with the transport unions was struck during a meeting at the Presidential Palace aimed at preventing public transport fare increases.
