A group of popular organizations has announced a transport strike and street demonstrations for Wednesday at various points around the country. According to El Caribe, these protests against the latest fuel and food price increases, will be led by the Broad Front of Popular Organizations (FALPO) and have the backing of the PRD, which called for "peaceful and orderly" protests.
The protests are due to begin on Wednesday with a transport strike in the northeast of the country, covering five provinces, and a demonstration outside the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the agency responsible for the fuel price increases. At the same time, there will be a noisy demonstration with cooking pots in Santiago and a march by leftist organizations through the barrios in the northern parts of Santo Domingo on 27 January. A general strike for Espaillat province has been called for 2 February. The FALPO announced a "great march" in San Francisco de Macoris on 4 February. The movement will go to the province of Monsignor Nouel on the 1, 2 and 3 of February and to San Cristobal on 2 February.
