National Police spokesman Colonel Maximo Baez Aybar revealed yesterday that 30 people have been detained for questioning in connection with the killing of Lieutenant Colonel Virgilio Casilla Minaya, and added that the commission that is handling the case has information that suggests that the high-ranking officer had been offered a RD$50,000 bribe to take names of several policemen off a police corruption case that he was investigating. According to Baez Aybar, the detainees include active and former police officers as well as several civilians.

He told Diario Libre reporters that they are pursuing several alleged criminals who usually operate in the area where Lieutenant Colonel Casilla Minaya was murdered. Several shell casings were found at the crime scene from 9mm pistols and a .38 caliber revolver that belonged to his brother, who was wounded on the night of the murder. The commission that is investigating the case includes Generals Hector Garcia Cuevas, who is the chairman, and Siriaco Nunez, the director of the Criminal Intelligence Center as well as 20 colonels who are highly trained in criminal investigations. Lieutenant Colonel Virgilio Casilla Minaya belonged to the Internal Affairs Central Directorate, which is headed by General Manuel Castro Castillo, and he was investigating more than 20 cases of corruption, several of which involved extortion. News reports highlight that Casilla was known for his honesty, and tutored students to make ends meet.
