In an unusual day at the Punta Cana International Airport in the province of La Altagracia, the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) arrested three Spaniards, two Russians and a Swiss national on drug smuggling charges.
The three Spaniards, Hugo Leiro Garrido, Monica Pardal Abad and Lorena Barcala Ares, together with Swiss traveler Flavio Luigi Toletti were found to have 35.2 kilos of cocaine in their luggage. Another 3.3 kilos of cocaine were found in the luggage of a Russian couple, Tatjana Greinade and Igor Pravnicenko.
According to DNCD chief Rolando Rosado Mateo, the three Spaniards and the Swiss national were attempting to board Jet Air Fly flight TB 602 to Brussels. The two Russians were hoping to get on Transaero flight UN554 to Moscow. The DNCD is trying to establish the local source of the drugs.
