Clifton Ramirez, treasurer of Scotiabank, a leading sponsor of the recent India Chamber of Commerce conference that focused on opportunities for both countries, recommends the establishing of a "joint study group" to explore actual potential business actually and the feasibility of a free trade agreement between India and the DR. He says in this effort the India Chamber of Commerce in the DR and governments would play a critical role.

Ramirez highlighted during the conference the importance for business of having a "banking-financial bridge" to connect the private interests of both markets and their potential in trade, services and foreign investments. Scotiabank has had a strong presence in India for over 20 years, participating in deals for the major financial and technological centers, and has branches in Mumbai, New Delhi, Coimbatore, Bangalore and Hyderabad. The bank has operated for 90 years in the DR.

Ramirez says Scotiabank is best positioned to support the potential flow of trade, services and foreign investments between both countries, including offering specialized loans for foreign buyers and financing subsidiaries.

Ramirez spoke during the relaunching of the Dominican-Indian Chamber of Commerce (CCDI).

Relations with India are strengthening, with new efforts to position the DR as a test market for Latin American operations. President Leonel Fernandez's visit is expected to open new doors for future educational, trade and business deals.
