Prostate cancer sufferers can now be treated with medical ultrasound techniques at the Center for Diagnostics and Advanced Medicine and Telemedicine (Cedimat). Doctors at Cedimat have been trained by Dr. Stefan Thuroff in his robotic HIFU Ablaterm n High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) for treatment of prostate cancer, which follows procedures that use the power of ultrasound to destroy deep-seated tissue with pinpoint accuracy.
Dr. Thuroff developed the technique at the University Hospital of Munich-Harlaching in Germany 15 years ago and it is now used in India, Europe and Canada. It is an alternative treatment to traditional surgery and follow-up chemo or radiotherapy. The procedure is minimally invasive.
The director of the Urology Unit at Cedimat, Octavio Cruz Pineda said that six patients have received the treatment that lasts 30-40 minutes. He said the treatment is effective in 90% of cases.
