Family members of murdered police lieutenant Virgilio Casilla Minaya, who died on 21 January in Los Alcarrizos, are challenging the official police report that says his assailants sought to rob him. His wife Mercedes Lugo Espinosa and his sister Leoncio Casilla Minaya dispute that the motive of the crime was to steal his gold chain and gun. Lugo Espinosa told Hoy she is very confused. She said the assailants never said it was a robbery, and did not take the officer's two cell phones, his university ring, or his wallet. "I am not satisfied with these results from the Police."
Casilla Minaya was assigned to investigate police corruption. He worked in the Internal Affairs Division under Major General Manuel Castro.
His brother said that a person is not killed so fast in a robbery. The Police have accused Idis Amin Fermin Penalo, Junior Valdez Rodriguez and Samuel Tejeda Hidalgo in connection with the crime. The Police arrested Diego Antonio Cruz and accused him of transported the assailants. Idis Amin Fermin Penalo turned himself into Alicia Ortega and the SIN news program, claiming he was just a middleman, as reported in Diario Libre. He called for an investigation into Major Cristino Batista of the Las Caobas police department.
Casilla said that three hours before the murder, his brother told him that present and former policemen had offered him RD$50,000 for him not to act in a case, but he refused. He was investigating a robbery against a foreigner, in which the agents wanted to keep the recovered spoils.
