The president of the National Organization of Shopping Malls (ONEC) Pedro Perez has criticized the bulging government payroll that at 444,595 represents 4.5% of the Dominican population. The government payroll is expected to reach RD$113.2 billion this year. The government payroll increased by 19% between 2007 and 2010, with 70,612 new jobs. Another 132,549 people receive government pensions, for a total of 10% of the economically active population and 11.8% of the total occupied people in the economy. As reported in Hoy, there is one government employee for every 21 inhabitants.

Perez said that around 30% of the government budget pays wages and many of these jobs are not productive. He said the government needed to commit to start reducing these jobs, especially the unproductive ones. He called for the creation of policies to encourage the productive sectors to increase jobs.
