Sandy Filpo, the new president of the Santiago Association of Businessmen and Industrialists (ACIS) spoke in support of the small business sector yesterday during the event marking the start of his presidency at the Teatro Regional Cibao in Santiago. As reported in Listin Diario, he criticized the government's lack of support for small business, which he says is the leading job creator. He criticized the fact that the government promotes the RD$14 billion it is making available for the Solidaridad welfare program while only RD$90 million is being allocated to finance small business. "We don't know how long this program [Solidaridad] will be sustainable, it is a subsidy that insults human dignity," said Filpo.
He said the government would be better off providing funds to help families start their own businesses, and then they will be able to pay for education and housing for their family.
He urged the creation of a guarantee fund to boost job creation. He said the fund is a priority for his presidency. He said that articles 86 and 539, among others needed to be modified.
He complained that today it is easier to buy the latest model automobile than to change a production line in a factory.
He also called for modifications in the Labor Code to end legal extortion in labor cases.
