The Ministry of Education delayed re-instating the school breakfast program at public schools with the installation of a new monitoring system to prevent the recurrence of food poisoning cases. However, according to news reports, day one opened with 17 children suffering food poisoning at two primary schools in Cotui. Education Minister Melanio Pareces said that 16 children at the Juan Sanchez Ramirez School and one other at the Reynoso School were affected by the breakfast. He described these cases as "lactose intolerance." The children were served chocolate-flavored pasteurized milk and cake supplied by the Grupo Lacteos Maria and the Alex Bakery in San Francisco de Macoris.
