The Panamanian health authorities have announced plans to hire over 200 doctors from the Dominican Republic to work in the interior of the country. The doctors will work for the Panamanian Social Security System in the areas where there are no local doctors. According to El Caribe, a total of 247 doctors will be hired in the first phase of the agreement with the Dominican government, if the Dominican authorities can provide them. According to Dr. Javier Diaz from the Panamanian Social Security headquarters, "we have asked for 247 doctors, and now we have to see if they can supply us with the 247". The request asks for cardiologists, radiologists, internal medicine specialists, gastro-enterologists, pathologists, and other specialists. The contracts will be for one year.
