Conservative journalist, diplomat and commentator Rafael Bonilla Aybar lost his long battle with cancer yesterday. Known all over the country as "Bonillita" for his feisty style of reporting and commenting, Bonilla Aybar was best known for his ferocious opposition to the government of Juan Bosch in the early 1960s. His brother had been a member of the 14 of June Expedition and he himself barely escaped death during the 1965 revolution that sought to return Juan Bosch to power. Bonilla Aybar had lived for long periods in exile during the time of Trujillo and later in 1965. When Joaquin Balaguer returned to power in 1966, he appointed Bonillita as the Dominican ambassador in Venezuela. At the time of his death he was producing the "Lo de hoy" program on Channel 10 and in 2006 President Fernandez appointed him as ambassador at the service of the Foreign Ministry.
