The Senate approved the changes to the Organic Law of the National Council of Magistrates (NCM) last night. These include an increase in the number of members on the council. The Senate added one magistrate to the original proposal of seven. Hoy newspaper describes how the NCM will select the judges for the Constitutional Tribunal, the Higher Electoral Tribunal, as well as their substitutes, and evaluate the performance of the judges who sit on the Supreme Court of Justice. The senators added the Attorney General of the Republic, ex officio, to the NCM. The legislation now goes to the Chamber of Deputies for final approval, after the Senate accepted the report from the Senate Judicial Commission chaired by Julio Cesar Valentin.
