At the closing of his weeklong visit to India, President Leonel Fernandez spoke at the Indian Council for World Affairs at Sapru House in New Delhi. The council is the internal think-tank of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India.
As reported by the IANS news service, he stated that India and the DR have lots in common. "The Dominican Republic looks forward to strengthening and deepening relations with India, with which we have a great deal in common, from the struggle for independence, including the fight for pride and dignity.
"We respect Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru not only for what they did for India but also for their contribution to the world," he said.
During his talk, President Fernandez again stressed the DR's potential as a gateway for Indian investments and trade with the Americas. He mentioned the Dominican Republic's free trade agreement with the US, as an attractive platform for Indian businesses to target the American markets.
President Fernandez also stressed the "great potential for tourism between the two countries," mentioning that the Dominican Republic was the largest tourist destination in the Caribbean.
Fernandez initiated a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Dominican Republic-based Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and the Indian Council for World Affairs.
The President called for a permanent linkage between thinkers and intellectuals from both countries, saying that development studies were a suitable focus for deliberation.
"We have many creative and innovative solutions being provided for development issues by countries like Brazil in India. I think that needs to be better understood," he added.
President Fernandez returned home last night after a 14-day trip that took him to Switzerland and India.
