President Leonel Fernandez attended the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) in New Delhi, which took place from 3-5 February.

The event was organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi. The event, themed "Tapping Local Initiatives and Tackling Global Inertia," was inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Also attending were Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Seychelles President James Alix Michel, former Prime Minister of Finland Esko Aho, former Prime Minister of Norway Gro Harlem Brundtland and former President of Chile Ricardo Lagos.

Nobel Laureates Yuan-Tseh Lee of Academia Sinica, Taiwan, James A Mirrlees of the University of Cambridge, and Joseph Stiglitz of Columbia University were special guest attendees. Also present were several government ministers and representatives of multilateral and bilateral organizations and foundations from around the world.

Concern about climate change and its disastrous impact, which needs immediate attention, was echoed by President Fernandez. At the inauguration, he said, "There is much work to be done around the world in order to define and implement policies and practices that allow us prevent the negative impact of natural disasters. The world of the future should not be one of irresponsible development, at the cost of fossil fuels, uncontrolled logging and other predatory actions, but sustainable progress, through the use of renewable resources," as reported by the event organizers.
