Three people have been arrested, including two Haitians and a Dominican, as part of investigations into a break-in at the residence of judge Claribel Nivar Arias. Judge Nivar Arias has been in the press for being in charge of the case against Sobeida Felix, the lover of Puerto Rican drug capo Jose Figueroa Agosto.
She was at home with her 13-year old son and was awoken by her housekeeper when the assailant had left. Her son slept through the break-in.
According to reports, the 43-year old housekeeper was raped and Nivar took her to the hospital. Judge Nivar was sleeping in another room and was undisturbed by the intruders.
She said the assailant stole her laptop but nothing else. The break-in occurred on Saturday, 5 February at 1am. The thieves broke the bars of a window to enter her home located in Madre Vieja, San Cristobal. Once her maid notified her of the break-in, she called the security guard, Sergeant Wilson Mateo Cuevas Capellan and she says he immediately responded. Press reports had said that he slept through the break-in.
The case against Sobeida Felix was postponed until 9 March at today's hearing.
Two Haitians, Wendy Linares Serrata and Misael Denisyan, and one Dominican, Rafael Ramirez de los Santos are under arrest, as reported in Diario Libre.
7dias.com.do reports that several prosecutors in the case have resigned in fear of the drug trafficking network. "The network is so feared, for the contract killings they are blamed of, and their capacity to evade judicial prosecution and ingrain themselves in powerful sectors. The report speculates that the break-in at judge Nivar Arias' house could have been a "message" to those beginning the case against Sobeida and others accused of being accomplices of Figueroa Agosto.
