An off-Broadway play, The Barbershop, has opened to good reviews at the New World Stages Stage 5 in Manhattan, New York. It is described as "A funny, yet emotional journey of hope, identity, and assimilation."

The show is performed mostly in Spanish and is about Beny Acevedo, landlord and proprietor of a bustling Washington Heights barbershop, who gets a multi-million dollar offer to sell his building, and faces the toughest decision of his life. The comedy/drama is directed by Dominican Waddys Jaquez, who adapted the script and wrote all the songs. On the cast list are Manny Perez, Mateo Gomez, Ruperto Vanderpool, Modesto Lacen and Sunilda Caraballo. The play was written by Puerto Ricans David Maldonado and Ari Maniel Cruz.

Performances are Mondays at 8pm, Wednesdays to Friday at 8pm, and Saturdays at 4:30 and 7:30pm, and Sunday at 3pm and 7pm. Tickets are US$55 to US$70.
