The Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC) has announced plans to install new radars at Las Americas (SDQ) in Santo Domingo and Gregorio Luperon Airport (POP) in Puerto Plata. The current equipment, according to El Nuevo Diario, is at least 16 years old. The IDAC decided to replace the equipment when a lightning strike disabled the secondary radar at SDQ back in 2005. According to IDAC, the country still complies with the regional commitments taken on by the Dominican government with the International Civil Aviation Organization (OACI) and the United States FAA. The new equipment will be made by the French company Thales and consists of models "Star 2000" and "RSM 970 S". Star 2000 is described as a primary surveillance radar for approach and extended approach control area. This affordable S-band radar is designed to deal with dense air traffic situations. On the other hand, RSM 970 S is a monopulse secondary surveillance radar that gives controller total support in severe air traffic conditions.

Since the older equipment is still in good shape and its main components will undergo reconditioning for transfer to other local airports with less traffic for use in tracking aircraft entering and leaving Dominican airspace.
