Readers are advised to fill up their tanks before the weekend. The National Association of Gasoline Retailers (Anadegas) has announced the start of a nationwide boycott of fuel purchases on Sunday and it will continue for an indefinite period. The gas station operators have a long list of complaints and this latest offensive is a move to force the government to modify the Hydrocarbon Law. As they told the newspapers and all of the popular radio shows, each gas station loses about RD$233,000 a month. Anadegas president Rafael Polanco said that the government receives the benefit of between RD$45 and RD$49 pesos per gallon of gasoline and between RD$32 and RD$38 for each gallon of diesel sold. Polanco also announced a once-weekly vigil outside the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
