Santo Domingo.- Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC) director Jose Tomas Perez on Monday announced the modernization of its primary and secondary radar system of the Las Americas International Airport, and the primary air surveillance radar of the terminal at Puerto Plata.
He said the equipment, in service since 1994, still provides excellent service to the country’s civil aviation.
The IDAC director said the systems were updated after a lighting strike damaged the radar at Las Americas in July 2005, and forms part of a continuing effort to adhere to regional commitments with the International Civil Aviation Organization (OACI) and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Perez said addition to the primary air surveillance radar sensor which he said will be installed in Puerto Plata’s international airport, its main components will be revised and restructured, whose improvement will be certified by the system’s manufacturer.
He said the secondary radar at Las Americas terminal will be removed once its operational period expires, but would be strategically relocated, to detect aircraft in the country’s airspace from Punta Cana (east) to Las Americas.
