The National Hotels & Restaurants Association (Asonahores) does not agree with the shopping malls association (ONEC) bid to modify the law that creates long weekends by moving holidays to the next Friday or Monday. Asonahores says the practice is good for the economy and that the law should not be changed. The association believes that moving the holidays to the end or start of the week benefits tourism.

The holidays also have less of a negative impact on production than when a holiday falls on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Asonahores says there is a global trend to back leisure activities, opportunities for families to get together and to stimulate domestic travel, especially in less advantaged communities. They back the creation of three-day weekends.

"For an employee it is not the same to stop work and have Thursday free, and then go back to work on Friday, than to receive three straight days," said a spokesperson for Asonahores. The leading tourism organization points out that for companies it is not the same to give a holiday on Wednesday, instead of working four straight days and then taking Friday or Monday off.

This January, moving holidays created three consecutive long weekends, leading to protests from some business groups. But Asonahores says that the long weekends contributes to domestic tourism and boosts commerce in the provinces. The DR Association of Industries of (AIRD) and the National Business Council (CONEP) are also in favor of maintaining the status quo.
