Despite the large number of violent deaths, the Dominican Republic only has 26 forensic doctors, or one for every six municipalities, according to the National Forensic Science Institute (INACIF). According to El Caribe, Inacif head Dr. Francisco Genao also revealed that there are only seven forensic pathologists in the entire country. Deputy Minister of Public Health, Sergio Sarita Valdez, believes that there should be one forensic specialist and one forensic pathologist in every provincial capital. Currently the numbers are just seven pathologists, 26 forensic specialists and 60 medical examiners in the whole country. According to Sarita Valdez, part of the problem is that "the dead don't vote". The tragedy of an accident or murder victim lying in the crime scene for many hours is typical in the Dominican Republic, due to the lack of these specialists. However, the same is true for natural deaths that occur in homes, where the family of the deceased might be forced to wait for many hours before the body can be transferred to the funeral home.
