A candidate for the most beautiful avenue in the Americas, ironically Santo Domingo's seafront Malecon is dying of neglect. In protest, the Santo Domingo Hotel Association has announced the funeral of the Caribbean Sea-bordering Malecon. Hoy newspaper joins the protest, making the point that the suspension of several major works on the Malecon like the Eugenio Maria de Hostos Park, the Fray Anton de Montesinos Monument and Plaza Guibia is evidence of the neglect by the government and city authorities. "The Malecon is an emblematic area. For city residents and foreign visitors it was an entertainment area par excellence. As it has fallen into unjustifiable neglect, the public has stopped frequenting it. The situation justifies an energetic but civic protest," writes the editorialist.
