Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua has announced the start of construction work on the Duarte 2 Corridor to ease the flow of north-south traffic in Santo Domingo, a program estimated to cost US$200 million or approximately RD$7.5 billion. As reported in El Caribe, the program includes the construction of tunnels at Maximo Gomez, Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln and Tiradentes avenues and a mixed system of tunnels and overpasses at Prolongacion 27 de Febrero (Pintura-Isabel Aguiar) and Luperon.

He announced an overpass connecting Ortega y Gasset with 27 de Febrero, in north-west direction, an overpass at Charles de Gaulle avenue with San Isidro, and one of the tunnels of 27 de Febrero under Nunez de Caceres avenue.

He announced a tender for the construction of the 70-km Haina Beltway that will connect Haina and Boca Chica passing through the municipalities of Santo Domingo East, North and West. This would mean that vehicles headed east or west would not have to pass through the city of Santo Domingo, especially cargo vehicles.

He said that the 1.2 km (2-lane) tunnel under the UASD University would be the longest in the country. It will cost US$70 million, work has advanced 30-40%, and it could be ready in November. This tunnel, which reaches a depth of 25 meters below the buildings in the area, will provide a north-south connection from Ortega y Gasset and 27 de Febrero to the corner of Jose Contreras and Santo Tomas de Aquino streets, as reported in El Caribe.

Hoy newspaper reports that Diaz Rua also said the government contemplates the expansion of the Autopista del Nordeste to four lanes.
