A recent visit to Abu Dhabi by the director of the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC) brings closer the day when Emirates Airlines could fly to Santo Domingo. Congress, nevertheless, is holding up future progress by not ratifying an open skies agreement.

The director of the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC) was in Abu Dhabi recently where he visited the Abu Dhabi aviation control center, considered the most important in the Middle East. IDAC president Jose Tomas Perez also visited the air controllers academy. The DR has a cooperation and free skies agreement with the United Arab Emirates. Senior Vice President of Airport Operations for Abu Dhabi Airports Company Ahmed Mohammed Al Haddabi said that Dominican air controllers could receive training under the agreement. The Abu Dhabi airport is undergoing renovation to be able to handle over 40 million passengers a year. Perez visited Abu Dhabi with ambassador Carlos Veras, permanent representative of the DR before the International Civil Aviation Organization based in Montreal, Canada, IDAC chief of security Colonel Cesar Cotes, lawyer Vinicio Castillo Seman and Listin Diario director Miguel Franjul.

There have been talks on the possibility of Emirates using Santo Domingo as a hub for increased flights to the Americas. The open skies agreements would enable the airline to fly from Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The route would be very promising, as it would link Asia to Latin America through Santo Domingo.

Emirates is an airline with more than 190 modern airplanes, as pointed out today in Listin Diario's editorial.

"The opening of a route linking our country with the Emirates and serve as a bridge for flight connections to other destinations and cargo transport undoubtedly opens enormous opportunities for a mutually beneficial relationship," says the editorialist.

The editorial makes the point that the open skies agreement needs to be ratified by the Dominican Congress in order to push ahead the agreements and initiatives that consolidate relations with the Emirates as other nations that are not sleeping instead of taking advantage of opportunities for potential foreign investment around the world.
