According to a report in today's Diario Libre, only 13% of consumers who receive tap water in the DR actually pay for it. Santo Domingo Water Corporation (CAASD) director Freddy Perez says that of 543,000 registered users, only about 300,000 pay for the service. He said monthly revenues were RD$80 million. He warned that water would become increasingly more expensive to serve.

Speaking yesterday, Perez announced the approval of five projects under the Potable Water and Sanitation Cooperation Fund (FCAS) for US$97 million with a donation from Spain and funding from the Inter-American Development Bank.

The approved projects are:

Strategy for the DR, coordinated by the Institute of Potable Water (INAPA)

Expansion of the Eastern Zone Aqueduct of Santo Domingo East

Monte Plata potable water service expansion

The Ambassador of Spain, Diego Bermejo also announced the approval of a cross-border Haiti-DR project with a donation of US$7 million from FCAS and IDB funding for US$14 million, as reported in Hoy.
