The leading ice cream company in the Caribbean, Bon Ice Cream is championing a conservation campaign for the Bicknell Thrush, a songbird that migrates from northern New York state, Vermont and the southeast of Canada to Quita Espuela Mountain in San Francisco de Macoris, and other areas in Bahoruco and the Central Mountain Range every year.

The Choco-Maple flavor is spearheading a fund-raising campaign launched this week by Bon president Jesus Moreno. Chris Rimmer of Vermont Ecostudies who has carried out studies of the migratory bird and heads conservation efforts in the US attended the event. 5% of all sales of the ice cream will be donated to the conservation project, local counterpart of international funds secured for the protection of the Bicknell Thrush in a project managed by the Quita Espuela Foundation that Moreno presides, Vermont Ecostudies and other organizations.

Jesus Moreno said that the program seeks to strengthen and expand the natural habitat of the bird in the DR, and establish an ecological corridor between Loma Quita Espuela and Guaconejo protected area in Nagua.

Choco Maple is prepared with maple syrup, organic chocolate and macadamia nut pieces.

"This delicious flavor seeks to improve the forests of Loma Quita Espuela in San Francisco de Macoris where the female birds come to feed. By protecting the habitat, we ensure the birds will find the feed for their reproduction and prevent their disappearance," said Moreno.
