The new mayor of Santiago, Gilberto Serulle says the relocation of 130 families living in the Vuelta Larga gully in Santiago will become a model project for Latin America. Some 120 apartments are under construction. Serulle told Listin Diario that the families had left of their own will and were located in temporary housing. He said he was proud that leading businesspeople and Santiago business associations have provided their support to the project with the donation of construction materials and equipment. He says this is a model community project that should be used as an example by other city councils. "When we took office everyone called the bridge over the gully "the bad smelling bridge" for the stink the pollution had generated over 50 years. We have this now controlled 80% and the sanitation work is about 30% completed." He told Listin Diario.
He hopes the case of Santiago to become a model for sanitation for the region.
