Census of legal Haitians

Asley Fil Aime, spokesman for the Association of Haitian Students, says that more than 23,000 Haitian students are enrolled in universities and schools in Santiago. He said a census is being carried out to determine the number of legal Haitians living in Santiago. He told El Caribe that he was working to get the Migration Department to provide them with legal residency cards. "The problem is that Migration does not recognizes the students studying in high schools and this would be a way of preventing them being detained by the migration inspectors," he said.
