Carnival arrived in Santo Domingo over the weekend with processions by traditional carnival characters along the Avenida Jimenez Moya-Jose Contreras (south of Av. Winston Churchill) and the Avenida Venezuela in Santo Domingo East. Sunday carnivals in Bonao, Santiago and La Vega continued strong with millions invested. Sponsorship from Brahma and Presidente beer companies and Brugal rum has helped push up the quality of these carnivals. Another new element is the participation of live bands playing free to the crowds watching the carnival.
In Santo Domingo there were many complaints that the authorities did not make alternative traffic arrangements for taking up the Jimenez Moya stretch, causing traffic jams for vehicles headed to the Sarasota avenue. Carnival continues on Sundays in February at these avenues in Santo Domingo and in Bonao, Santiago and La Vega. The La Vega carnival is the largest, with the participation of 80 groups that parade along Avenida Libertad.
