President Leonel Fernandez, by means of Decree 60-11, has created the Commission for the Centennial of the birth of actress Maria Africa Gracia Montez (Maria Montez), which will coordinate the program to honor this Dominican icon.
The 14-person commission will be chaired by the Minister of Culture, Jose Lantigua. The decree, according to El Nuevo Diario, orders the commission to restore and revitalize the site where the actress was born, in Barahona.
A museum and a monument will be located there.
