With the open launching of the aspirations of two-time Fernandez administration Vice President Rafael Alburquerque, other pre-candidates are wary. To calm these, secretary general of the ruling PLD, Reinaldo Pared Perez told El Caribe that the President would not support any pre-candidate and would take the role of an impartial arbiter. El Caribe, nevertheless, reports that only Alburquerque has launched his aspirations using a photograph of Fernandez as his supporter. Others have not dared, reports El Caribe.
"Leonel would be incapable of supporting one over the others. He is dedicated to ensuring that the party remains unified after the election," said the Senate president.
Other contenders for the PLD candidacy into the 2012 presidential election are Interior & Police Minister Franklin Almeyda Rancier, the director of the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC), Jose Tomas Perez, former secretary of the Presidency Danilo Medina, former PLD senator for Santiago Francisco Dominguez Brito, Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia Fernandez, and former administrator of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE), Radhames Segura.
