The head of the National Drug Control Department (DNCD), Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo, said last night that an organization of Mexican drug traffickers is operating in the Dominican Republic and trying to penetrate pharmacies in Santiago and in the Cibao Valley. According to Listin Diario, during a meeting in Santiago the DNCD told pharmacy owners that the Mexicans were being watched. The meeting was held at the offices of the Santiago Traders and Industrialists Association (ACIS). The general quoted President Fernandez as saying that "they shall not pass". General Rosado Mateo told reporters that the meeting had been held so he could get to know the pharmacy owners and to make sure that this Mexican penetration would not take place.
El Caribe reports that the traffickers purchase large amounts of chemical components in the pharmacies to manufacture ecstasy. Rosado Mateo said: We are carrying out operations as authorized by the law to keep controls on those pharmaceuticals, in what quantities they are sold, where, and how they move on the market," he said.
ACIS president Sandy Filpo said that the meeting paves the way for creating mechanisms for understanding with pharmacy owners who are complaining about their businesses being raided by the DNCD.
