The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), the state university, will elect a new rector in a second round of voting, according to preliminary data disclosed by representatives of the main candidates yesterday. Diario Libre says that Mateo Aquino Febrillet was at the top of the count and obtained 46% of the votes, while Ivan Grullon had obtained 40% of the votes. Last night both candidates and their supporters celebrated their passage to a second round of voting that will take place next Tuesday, 22 February.
A press release issued by the UASD Public Relations Department noted that without the votes of the Humanities Faculty, as of last night Aquino Febrillet had obtained 923 votes and Grullon 819. And it said that Alejandro Pichardo and Rafael (Nino) Feliz had obtained 160 and 143 votes respectively. Both Aquino Febrillet as well as Grullon expressed confidence in obtaining the support of Feliz and Pichardo in their bids for the post of rector.
