AES Dominicana president Marco de la Rosa has told reporters that the "guiding principle" for investment in the energy sector should to lower costs in the primary sector-generation. He said that this would require putting faith on coal and natural gas as key energy sources. However, he added that once the system was fully based on these two fuels, then the addition of renewable energy would be appropriate and welcome.

He observed that state subsidies are involved in countries where solar energy generation is significant. He noted that "here, what we have to do is reduce the subsidies".

De la Rosa was interviewed by Hoy economic reporter Aleida Plasencia as he attended a panel discussion on the diversification of the energy pool in the Dominican Republic. During the discussion, speakers expressed opinions on the need to define the energy route the country should follow in the near future and the need to get away from petroleumnbased energy.

The wealth of possibilities offered by renewable energy sources was also discussed, including wind, solar and even mini-hydro-electric dams with capacity for up to five megawatts.
