The head of the Conatra transport union suggested yesterday that the government expand the use of natural gas for public transport and substitute the use of gasoline. Antonio Marte pointed out that a gallon of natural gas costs RD$44 and a gallon of gasoline costs RD$150 on average. He said that the first savings for the government would be the elimination of the Bonogas card for drivers, a subsidy of RD$3,420 a month given to drivers of multi-fare taxis, or conchos. Marte said that if the government were to subsidize the acquisition of converter kits, everyone would benefit. He pointed out that as of today only 400 vehicles are using natural gas, and these are yellow taxis that belong to a company that plans to import another 400 of the same type. Marte said that since not all Dominicans can afford one hundred pesos for a taxi fare, the government ought to provide more cars with natural gas.
