Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the Director of the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has commended the Dominican public health authorities for their preventive measures against the spread of cholera in the DR. In a letter to the Ministry of Public Health of the DR, Frieden is reported to have said that the Dominican experience of keeping cholera in check should serve as "a great example" for the region and countries affected by the disease.

Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez said that in a letter to his office Frieden highlighted the role of the country in preventing the disease. Frieden in the letter congratulated the Ministry on their efforts. The letter mentions that it is admirable to note the scale of efforts carried out to prevent the disease, including centers for treating the disease, the public awareness campaign, and the implementation of epidemiological checks and labs that has been carried out in recent months.

Those efforts serve as a great example to the region, and to other countries affected by cholera, stated Frieden, according to the Ministry of Public Health

As of 10 February, in the DR there have been more than 380 cases of cholera, 3 known deaths of Haitians who did not seek hospital care in time, after the first case of the disease was reported in November 2010.

In Haiti there have been more than 231,070 and 4,549 deaths as of 9 February 2011.
