In today's Diario Libre, executive editor Adriano Miguel Tejada writes that the Dominican Republic seems to be navigating on "autopilot."

"The maneuverings of the pilot are not felt, no one talks to the passengers or to the crew, and maybe because of that, everyone on board seems to be doing what ever they want.

"No one knows if there are clear public policies for the most pressing issues for society. The ministers do not respond to the people. The National District city council creates taxes that clash with national taxes and the legislators do not even protest that their role is being taken over. No one seems to have any direction, any sense of direction as to where we want to take the country.

"There is the impression that the government has been left without ideas as it clashes against the tough reality. Others thinks the government is scared of taking hard decisions that the times require, on the touchy issues of government corruption, electricity, education, citizen security, control of migration and others.

"Others think there are too many government officials looking after their personal affairs before the matters of state.

"The government cannot dodge its responsibility for governing and directing the nation. The authorities were chosen and appointed to govern according to the Constitution and the laws. They were not invited to a party.

"The country hopes that the pilot will take control and takes the decisions that the times demand. No more, no less."
