The Santiago Prosecutors Office has dismantled what is being described as "a virtual prostitution operation" and arrested 16 people. Santiago prosecutors were working with members of the Police hi-tech crimes Investigation Department (DICAT). The ring, under the cover of a company called Dominican Republic Media Ventures, operated by recruiting university students in Santiago. It was located on Av. Las Carreras. The students were paid wages of up to RD$45,000 and could make an extra US$50 a day, as reported in El Caribe. In the operation to close down the pornographic filming unit that took place at 10pm last night, vibrators, computers, webcams, beds and flyers were confiscated. The flyers had been distributed during carnival on Sunday. El Caribe reports that several weeks ago, UASD Rector Franklin Garcia Fermin asked the police to find out who was responsible for a promotion that sought to recruit university students for what appeared to be prostitution work.
Last month, El Nacional denounced the effort to recruit the students for the work offering wages up to RD$75,000 a month.
