The Toronto Blue Jays agreed yesterday to give 30-year old Dominican Jose Bautista a US$64-million, five-year extension. Last season he became the all-time Blue Jays home run king with 48 homers. He is being asked to play third baseman in the new contract, when his preferred position is right field. The deal thus avoids arbitration and keeps Bautista from free agency in the fall. Reports are this is the fourth largest contract the Toronto Blue Jays have signed, comparable to those of Vernon Wells (US$126 million, seven years), Alex Rios (US$69.8 million) and Carlos Delgado (US$68 million, four years).
