Danilo Medina, the strongest running contender to be the candidate for the ruling PLD party in the 2012 presidential election according to the Hamilton poll, called for the party to hold its primary no later than May so that the chosen candidate can have a year to carry out the campaign, as reported in Hoy. He called for the PLD Central Committee to open the internal campaign in March, as he says has been traditional in the last four elections.

There is still uncertainty whether President Leonel Fernandez, who has majority in Congress, will call for a change of the 2010 Constitution so he can seek re-election. Other contenders that have expressed interest over the past year in being the candidate are: First Lady Margarita Cedeno, Vice President Rafael Alburquerque, Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia, Interior & Police Minister Franklyn Almeyda, former senator Francisco Dominguez Brito, and the director of the Aviation Board Jose Tomas Perez. Recent polls show if President Leonel Fernandez does not run for President, Danilo Medina is by far the strongest contender.

The Hamilton February poll showed, with President Fernandez not running, the leading PLD hopefuls were ranked: Danilo Medina 49%, Jose Tomas Perez 25%, Rafael Alburquerque 15%.
